Justin Herbert became the latest player to reset the NFL's quarterback market when he agreed to a five-year, $262.5 million extension with the Chargers on Tuesday.Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was among those impre sed by the contract that his fellow 2020 draftee managed to lock in."I mean, it's big," Tagovailoa marveled when asked about the extension , before adding."It's really good for the quarterback market. It gets me excited. It gets me going."MORE: Shawn Marion Jersey It's easy to understand why Tagovailoa would feel that way. The quarterback market has been burgeoning for years now and has shown no signs of slowing down.In fact, Herbert's extension was the third record-setting quarterback deal of the 2023 NFL offseason. Jalen Hurts first became the league's highest-paid player in April before Lamar Jackson overtook him 10 days later. And nearly three months after that, Herbert took the mantle Shaquille O'Neal Jersey from Jackson.Tagovailoa acknowledged that he is happy for his peers and congratulated them. But he also is looking forward to showing that he deserves that kind of big-money extension as well."I'm always a person who wants to prove to myself that I deserve whatever I get," Tagovailoa said when asked about a potential megadeal with the Dolphins. "So, for me, I feel like this is something that I need to work for. It's plain and simple as that."MORE: Tagovailoa officially became extension-eligible during the 2023 offseason. However, much of the energy regarding potential extensions for 2020 quarterback draftees was focused on Hurts, Herbert and Joe Burrow, who remains without a long-term deal. Tagovailoa has been somewhat of an afterthought as a result.Of course, there is a reason for that. While Tagovailoa's stats are strong he led the NFL in pa ser rating (105.5), yards per attempt (8.9) and touchdown percentage (6.3) in 2022 he has struggled to stay healthy during his career. He has played just 36 of a po sible 50 regular- Jalen Lecque Jersey season games and mi sed his lone opportunity to make a playoff start.The primary concern with Tagovailoa is his history of head injuries. He has during his NFL career that have kept him out of action for long periods.Given that history, it's understandable that the Dolphins would want to wait and see if Tagovailoa can stay healthy for a full season before rewarding him with a quarter-billion-dollar deal, especially since he is currently under contract through the 2024 season. To date, he has never started more than 13 games in a single season.While that lack of commitment may bother some quarterbacks, Tagovailoa doesn't seem perturbed by his lengthier wait."I haven't talked about any contract since what I've understood with my fifth-year extension. I don't think that's a worry of mine," he told reporters. I think we have the potential to do something really, really special."If that's the case and Tagovailoa can stay on the field, then he should have a chance to cash in with a monster deal during the 2024 offseason. That could eventually mean an extension that is the largest in NFL history, ahead of Herbert and, potentially, Burrow.So, while Tagovailoa's waiting game comes with some risk given his injury history, there is plenty of upside to his patience.
