Zum Zeitpunkt des französischen Kriegseintritts wurden unter anderem sowohl Österreich als auch Spanien (inklusive der Spanischen Niederlande, in etwa das heutige Belgien) von den Habsburgern regiert, weshalb sich Frankreich wie so oft in der Geschichte von diesen umklammert fühlte. Dazu kamen die üblichen Motive wie erhoffte Gebietsgewinne in Richtung Osten etc.

Die Frage sollte wohl eher lauten: "Im 30-jährigen Krieg war das katholische Frankreich auf protestantischer Seite und führte Krieg gegen das ebenfalls katholische Österreich..... Warum?" Und für die Beantwortung genügt ein Blick auf eine damalige Landkarte, insbesondere auf Frankreichs Nachbarländer.
